This article reports that the 5 year prevalence of common mental disorders among US army aviation personnel was 3.6% . Following mental health treatment 55.3% of affected aviators were granted waivers to return to flight duty while 44.7% were suspended or disqualified. The study reported that waivers being granted were much more likely to occur for adjustment disorders (73.4%), followed by anxiety disorders (53.2%), PTSD (43.0%), and depressive disorders (35.7%). The authors emphasize that early identification and intervention before conditions become severe significantly increased the likelihood of a successful return to duty.
